Watch Winder Cleaning and Maintenance Guide

Professional cleaning and maintenance to keep your OEEA watch winder in optimal condition,
extend its lifespan, and protect your treasured timepieces.

1 Preparation

Before starting cleaning, please complete these safety steps:

  • Disconnect power - Unplug the AC power adapter
  • Remove batteries - If using battery power, remove all batteries
  • Remove watches - Take out all watches from the winder and store safely
  • Prepare tools - Gather the following cleaning supplies
Recommended Cleaning Supplies:
  • Microfiber soft cloth (2 pieces, one damp one dry)
  • Soft-bristle brush (makeup or paint brush)
  • Wood furniture wax (optional, natural beeswax recommended)
  • Mild detergent (diluted, pH-neutral)
  • Cotton swabs
  • Small vacuum cleaner (with brush attachment)
Do Not Use: Alcohol, ammonia-based cleaners, bleach, abrasive sponges, steel wool, spray-on furniture wax (may seep into motor).

2 Clean Wood Case

OEEA watch winders use premium rubberwood and walnut. Proper cleaning maintains the wood's luster:

  1. Lightly dampen a microfiber cloth with water (wring until not dripping);
  2. Gently wipe the entire wood case surface to remove dust and fingerprints;
  3. Immediately dry with another dry microfiber cloth to prevent moisture from seeping into the wood;
  4. For stubborn stains, add one drop of mild detergent to the damp cloth (test on a bottom corner first).
Pro Tip: Wipe following the wood grain direction to avoid scratching the finish.

3 Clean Velvet Lining

Velvet lining easily collects dust and skin flakes, but is not suitable for wet cleaning:

  1. Use a soft-bristle brush (makeup brush works best) to gently sweep dust from the lining surface;
  2. For crevices and corners, use a low-suction vacuum with brush attachment (do not use a standard nozzle directly);
  3. For small particles trapped in fibers, gently remove with a lint roller;
  4. Do not use any liquid on the velvet, as it may cause fading or deformation.
Important: If the lining gets stained, use a slightly damp white cotton cloth with a dabbing motion - never rub. For severe stains, consult a professional dry cleaning service.

4 Clean Watch Pillows

Watch pillows directly contact watch straps and should be cleaned regularly:

  1. Most OEEA watch pillow covers are removable (open Velcro or zipper at the bottom);
  2. Remove the cover and hand wash in cold water with mild detergent;
  3. Gently squeeze out water (do not wring or twist);
  4. Air dry away from direct sunlight or dryer heat;
  5. Once completely dry, put the cover back on the pillow core.
Tip: We recommend washing watch pillow covers monthly to prevent sweat and skin oil buildup.

5 Clean Glass/Acrylic Panel

OEEA watch winders feature high-transparency glass or acrylic covers:

  1. Use a dedicated glasses cloth or microfiber lint-free cloth;
  2. If needed, spray a small amount of glass cleaner on the cloth (never directly on the panel);
  3. Gently wipe in circular motions;
  4. For acrylic panels, never use alcohol-based cleaners as they can cause clouding and cracking.
Do Not Use: Paper towels, newspaper, or regular towels on glass/acrylic - they cause micro-scratches.

6 Motor and Vent Maintenance

Keeping motor vents clean is essential for extending your watch winder's lifespan:

  1. Locate the vents on the bottom or back of the watch winder;
  2. Use cotton swabs or a soft brush to gently clean dust from vents;
  3. Use a compressed air canister (short bursts) to blow out internal dust;
  4. Do not use a vacuum directly on vents to avoid damaging internal components;
  5. Check vents every 3 months to ensure no blockage.
Note: Do not attempt to disassemble the case to clean the motor interior, as this may void your warranty. For deep maintenance, contact OEEA official after-sales service.

7 Wood Waxing (Every 6-12 Months)

Regular waxing protects the wood case, prevents cracking, and gives a warm luster:

  1. Ensure the wood surface is thoroughly cleaned and completely dry;
  2. Apply a small amount of wood wax (natural beeswax or orange oil wax recommended) to a soft cloth;
  3. Apply in circular motions, covering the entire wood surface evenly;
  4. Wait 5-10 minutes for the wax to penetrate;
  5. Buff with another clean soft cloth using circular motions until a soft sheen appears.
OEEA Recommendation: Howard Feed-N-Wax beeswax and orange oil blend, or Liberon furniture wax.

8 Storage Recommendations

Proper storage is equally important when you are not using your watch winder:

  • Store in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight
  • Keep away from radiators, AC vents, and humidifiers
  • Maintain humidity between 40%-60% (excess humidity causes wood swelling and mold)
  • When not in use for extended periods, remove batteries and cover with a dust cover
  • Avoid placing heavy objects on top of the winder
Avoid: Basements (humid), attics (extreme temperature changes), bathrooms (high humidity).

10 Frequently Asked Questions

Can I clean my watch winder case with alcohol?

No. Alcohol will dissolve or damage the lacquer finish on the wood surface, especially piano gloss and open-pore finishes. Use a slightly damp microfiber cloth instead.

Why does my watch winder make a slight humming sound? Does it need cleaning?

OEEA watch winders use silent coreless motors with normal operating noise below 20dB. If the sound becomes noticeably louder, dust buildup in the vents may be causing poor heat dissipation. Clean the vents following Step 6.

What if I accidentally get watch lubricating oil on the velvet lining?

Immediately blot excess oil with white paper towel. Then cover the stain with a small amount of cornstarch, leave for several hours to absorb the oil, and gently brush off the starch with a soft brush. Do not use water or cleaners.

Can fine scratches on the wood case be repaired?

Minor scratches can be treated by rubbing with a walnut kernel (cut a walnut and rub the meat directly on the scratch) or using a professional wood repair marker. Deep scratches should be handled by a professional restoration service.

Will cleaning and maintenance affect my warranty?

Routine cleaning and maintenance performed according to this guide will not affect your warranty. However, damage caused by disassembly or use of chemical solvents is not covered. Contact OEEA support if you have questions.
